Digital Line Graph (DLG)

A DLG, better known as a Digital Line Graph, is simply a digital representation of cartographic information.  The United States Geological Survey DLG data have been classified to fit under large, intermediate, and small scales.  The DIGITAL image above is a prime example of a DLG.

Thematic Maps

The Map Collection & Cartographic Information Services Unit at the University of Washington has noted that Thematic Maps can and are able to “portray physical, social, political, cultural, economic, sociological, agricultural, or any other aspects of a city, state, region, nation, or continent.”  Therefore, thematic maps are based primarily on THEME X to describe an AREA Y.  The current picture serves as an example of a Thematic Map as it displays the House 2010 Election Results (THEME X) of the entire United States (AREA Y).

Statistical Map

A Statistical Map is a map in which data is clearly organized with a representation of some sort of figure, a number or percentage for example.  The clip above is a statistical representation of the growth rates of the Internet in Africa between July 1995-July 1996.  Percentages are being used as use for statistics in this particular map.

Bilateral Graph

The graph above can be categorized as a Bilateral Graph as two variables are being compared within one graph.  Distinctively, this graph compares the pain level of patients before and after treatments.  The X and Y axis have also been labeled accordingly. 

Cartographic Animation

Cartographic Animations are defined by Professor Michael Peterson from the University of Nebraska as “a graphic art that occurs in time, animation is a dynamic visual statement that evolves through change in the display.”  The image provided is a Snapshot of a Video on QuickTime from my computer.  The link under will allow users to quickly view a cartographic temporal animation in the use of irrigation in the state of Nebraska in a thirty-three year time span.  The uses of cartographic animations are a wonderful resource when the need to see a change in time, specifically for a geographical area arises.

Climograph

A tool used to reference temperatures and precipitation of a given area is also better known as a Climograph such as the one above.  The image used supplies data recorded in Adelaide, Australia for an entire 12 months.  Specifically in this image, temperatures are displayed in Fahrenheit and precipitation in inches.  Furthermore, precipitation is plotted by bar graph while temperatures are plotted through the use of a line graph. 

Population Profile

Provided by the Population Reference Bureau, the picture above is serving as an example of a Population Profile.  As its title infers, a population profile would inform the observer with information of a given population as it may relate to age.  The picture up top provides data for Latinos and Whites in 2009 in the United States classified by age and gender.
